Connect FRED to Claude Code, Codex and Cursor through MCP

Connect FRED to Claude Code, Codex or Cursor with copy-paste configuration, then use the documentation and your account from your assistant.

Model Context Protocol

FRED MCP is available. It connects your assistant to the documentation and your customer account. Ask it to integrate the API into your project, find your products or prepare a quote without leaving Claude Code, Codex or Cursor.

FRED remains in private beta; if you do not have an account yet, request access.

Before you start: you need a FRED customer account and Claude Code, Codex CLI or Cursor installed on your computer. You connect to FRED in your browser, with no API key to copy.

Connect FRED

Choose your assistant. The commands and configuration are complete: there are no fields to replace.

1. Add FRED from your terminal.

Terminal
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user fred https://docs.fredpod.com/api/mcp

FRED will be available in all projects for your user.

2. Open Claude Code.

Terminal
claude

In the Claude Code conversation, enter this command, select fred and start connecting:

In Claude Code
/mcp

3. Authorise access in FRED. Sign in on the browser page, review the permissions, then click Return to my assistant. The /mcp menu lets you check that fred is connected.

1. Add FRED from your terminal.

Terminal
codex mcp add fred --url https://docs.fredpod.com/api/mcp

2. Connect your FRED account. If adding the server has not already started the connection, run:

Terminal
codex mcp login fred

On the browser page, sign in to FRED, review the permissions, then click Return to my assistant.

3. Check the configuration and open Codex.

Terminal
codex mcp list
codex

fred should appear in the list. Open a new conversation if Codex was already running, then try the request below to check access.

1. Add the configuration to your project.

In Cursor, create .cursor/mcp.json at your project root and paste this content. If the file already exists, add only the fred entry under mcpServers, preserving your other servers.

.cursor/mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fred": {
      "url": "https://docs.fredpod.com/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

To use FRED in all your projects, place this configuration in ~/.cursor/mcp.json in your user directory instead.

2. Connect your FRED account.

In Customize, open MCP servers and start connecting fred. Sign in on the FRED browser page, review the permissions, then click Return to my assistant.

3. Try FRED in Agent.

Check that the fred server is enabled and its tools are available. Open an Agent conversation, then copy the first test below.

In your assistant's MCP settings, add a remote server:

FieldValue
Namefred
TransportHTTP / Streamable HTTP
AuthenticationOAuth
MCP server URL
https://docs.fredpod.com/api/mcp

Start connecting and authorise access on the FRED browser page. Your client must support remote MCP servers and OAuth.

Check the connection

Copy this request into your assistant:

First test — read only
Use the fred MCP to read my account and search the documentation
for how to get a quote. Summarise the steps and link to the guides.
Do not create or modify anything.

The assistant should be able to read your account and cite FRED guides. If it cannot find the fred tools, see troubleshooting.

Integrate FRED into your project

Open your project in Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, then copy this request:

Add FRED quotes to my application
Use the fred MCP to read the FRED documentation on quotes, shipping
and authentication. Inspect my project and implement an integration suited
to its stack to upload a 3D model and display a delivered quote.
Keep FRED_API_KEY on the server and provide a .env.example file without secrets.
Handle quotes still being analysed, errors and prices that are still indicative.
Add tests with mocked responses, without calling real services.
Do not create any orders or trigger any payments.

MCP gives your assistant access to FRED guides and tools. For your application's requests, then create its own server-side API key.

Copy-paste examples

Explore my products
Using the fred MCP, find my active products. Show their names, variants
and IDs in a table. Do not modify anything.
Prepare a quote
Using the fred MCP, help me price one of my products including shipping.
Start by asking me to choose the product and its variant, then ask for the quantity
and destination. Wait for this information before creating the quote.
Show the delivered total and distinguish an estimate from a confirmed price.
Do not create any orders.
Track my orders
Using the fred MCP, list my recent orders, their status and the available
tracking information. Identify those waiting for action from me.
Do not modify or cancel any orders.

What you authorise

The connection lets the assistant read and manage your account's files, products, brands, quotes and orders according to the permissions granted. Billing remains read only.

Every order prepared through MCP must be approved in FRED before payment and manufacturing. The assistant provides a link to review the amount and confirm.

You can revoke access from your account's API keys by deleting the MCP · your application key. Enter credentials only on the FRED sign-in page opened in your browser.

Upload a file

upload_file accepts base64-encoded file bytes, up to 2 MiB before encoding: STL, 3MF or OBJ for models; PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG for images; PDF for documents. The assistant must have access to the actual file. Providing only a path on your computer or a URL is not enough.

For a larger file, upload it in FRED, then ask the assistant to find it with list_files. Analysis, dimensions and geometry issues are available with get_file.

Prices and approval

Upload the file or find an existing product before requesting a quote. If a quote is still processing, read it again. Indicative prices cannot be used to order.

To prepare an order, the assistant must provide the chosen option, your shipping address and a price limit in euro cents. FRED enforces manual approval, even if your account normally allows automatic orders. Open the returned link and approve the amount and order in FRED before any payment or start of manufacturing.

Quote and order creation uses an idempotency key: a retry after a timeout or a processing response keeps the same parameters and key. Changing the request requires a new key.

Uploads and the creation of products, brands or incidents do not guarantee idempotence: after a timeout, check the corresponding list before trying again. Cancelling a paid order may request a refund; it must reflect your explicit request. An order already in production cannot be cancelled with this tool.

MCP remains restricted to the customer account: it does not control printers, administer workshops or modify payment methods.

Each access token lasts one hour and can be renewed automatically for 30 days by your client. The client may request a subset of permissions; an unauthorised feature requires a new connection.

For advanced options, see the official documentation for Claude Code — MCP, Codex — MCP and Cursor — MCP.
